MS Insel Mainau
The MS Insel Mainau is the BSB’s first electric ship—accessible, sustainable, and innovative. Thanks to solar panels on the open deck, the catamaran generates green electricity while underway and connects Mainau Island, Unteruhldingen, and Meersburg.
The MS Insel Mainau is a milestone in the history of Lake Constance shipping: As the first fully electric vessel operated by Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe (BSB), it embodies sustainable mobility and technical innovation.
The modern catamaran was designed to be fully accessible and is equipped with a powerful 960 kWh battery—enough for a range of approximately 120 kilometers. A special highlight is the solar deck with bifacial solar cells that utilize both direct sunlight and reflected light. This allows the ship to generate up to 30% of its energy needs on its own while underway.
Since entering service in September 2022, the MS Insel Mainau has been operating regularly between Mainau Island, Unteruhldingen, and Meersburg—quietly, emission-free, and forward-thinking. With room for up to 300 passengers, the ship sets new standards in eco-friendly shipping.
For its innovative concept, the MS Insel Mainau was awarded the “Lake Constance Innovation Prize 2023” in the sustainability category. It symbolizes the beginning of a new era on Lake Constance: By 2035, the BSB plans to convert its entire fleet to environmentally friendly propulsion systems.
